Well, a busy week is now in the books (I think I always call it a "busy week" when the recap numbers more than half a dozen items)... Here's what's up on the KC dial!
JEANNE ASHLEY EXITS STAR 102 -- It was the end of an era at KCKC on Friday, as Star 102's original midday personality Jeanne Ashley bid farewell to Kansas City. Her departure, which was announced a couple of weeks ago, comes after just over 11 years at the AC outlet. When she first joined Star 102 (then KSRC) in February 1999, Jeanne was the station's first on-air talent, and the only import to an original lineup that otherwise featured longtime Kansas City names like Denis Prior, Mike O'Brien, Don Bender, and Wendy Garrett. As she exits, Jeanne is considered by many insiders and listeners to truly be a "Kansas City jock."
In addition to a pair of lengthy runs hosting middays, Jeanne also spent just over a year in mornings (January 2005 - February 2006) after the departure of the Monk & Kelly team. For her final show, along with calls of thanks & well-wishes from listeners, a number of great memories from the last 11 years were aired as well - an excellent sendoff. Congratulations, thanks, and best of luck to ya, Jeanne, from us here at BroadcastKC.
CHRISTY CAMPO TO KCKC MIDDAYS -- One familiar voice will take the place of another, as Star 102 names Christy Campo the station's new midday host. Campo, who joined the station in June 2008 as morning co-host, begins her new 11AM - 4PM duties on Monday (4/26) and maintains her position as KCKC Promotions Director. With the move, Program Director Ed Walker becomes solo morning host only two months after shifting to AM drive with the departure of Dave Fogel.
Christy (who you may also recall from a previous radio life as KZPL's Christina Campobasso) tells BroadcastKC that she's "sad to see Jeanne go, especially right after Dave... but I know good things are in store for her. It'll be nice to try things on my own and get to develop a more personal relationship with the listeners. Plus I get to sleep in everyday!"
MARCH PPM NUMBERS RELEASED -- The March PPM numbers for Kansas City were released on Friday, and for the first time since PPM was implemented, KQRC took the number one position in the 6+ ratings. For the complete numbers, cume, and more breakdown, CLICK HERE.
DJ KIRBY APPEARS ON WDAF -- In a unique arrangement, former KMXV mix-master DJ Kirby has taken to the Entercom airwaves, but not at KKSN, where we've been expecting to see him. As of this weekend, in addition to as-yet-unknown duties at Gen X Radio 99-7, Kirby has a country mixshow airing on Entercom's 106-5 the Wolf. The new "Wolf Saturday Night Dance Party" now airs from 9PM to Midnight every Saturday, featuring country mixes by DJ Kirby (though that fact was never mentioned in any of the imaging during last night show).
KKSN DROPS AMERICAN TOP 40 -- Well, Seacrest is indeed out at KKSN, at least on weekends. Following the station's recent change to the "Gen X Radio" format, Ryan Seacrest's American Top 40 countdown had initially remained on the schedule, however this past week the show was dropped from the station's online program listings.
KTBG PLEDGE DRIVE CONTINUES -- Another week down, and hopefully not much longer to go, for University of Central Missouri non-comm AAA 90.9 the Bridge. KTBG's spring pledge drive continues as the station nears the $51,000 goal needed to ensure continued federal funding. If you'd like to pledge your support to the area's only AAA broadcaster, please do so by CLICKING HERE.
KCUR SEEKS EDITOR; ANALYST -- Two new positions are open at UMKC non-comm KCUR, where the station is seeking applications for a pair of posts in their recently announced Agribusiness Local Journalism Center. The openings, for an Editor and Outreach Coordinator/Analyst, can be accessed by CLICKING HERE.
NEW FEATURES AT PLANET RADIO -- As Randy Raley's PlanetRadio.us continues to grow and evolve, the station has added three new special features on Sunday evenings. The 6PM hour is now set aside for listener requests. At 7PM, the "Classic Album Spotlight" features an important album, aired in its entrity. Then at 8PM, the KYYS/KCFX alum himself hosts "Randy's Top Ten," where Randy will play and discuss his top ten cuts from categories like "Zeppelin songs" or "Guitarists."
NEANDERPAUL AUDITION UPDATE -- After another four days this past week filling in at talker K-News Radio in Southern California, KQRC alum Paul "Neanderpaul" Marshall has another audition on the horizon. According to his website, he will spend the week of May 3rd - 7th in Columbus, Ohio co-hosting afternoons with Ronni Hunter at rocker 99.7 the Blitz. The station, which is owned by North American Broadcasting (where Marshall once hosted mornings for classic hits sister WEGE-FM), just recently re-claimed its longtime "Blitz" moniker and is seeking a local morning team to replace syndicated Bob & Tom. Pending the results of his tryout, Neanderpaul (and Ronni) could be the chosen ones. Stay tuned...
GARCIA JOINS WBYT/SOUTH BEND -- WDAF-FM (Country 106.5) alum Jesse Garcia is on the move, as he will exit his Operations Manager duties at NRG Media in Wausau-Stevens Point, WI at the end of the month. Garcia will then become Program Director at Federated Media's country outlet WBYT/South Bend, IN.
That about covers this week's recap...Have a great week!
