Hey! Welcome back! Hope you've had a great weekend, and thanks for visiting us here at BroadcastKC. We're proud to bring you the KC Radio news & information you need each week. If you have a tip, update, or omission, don't hesitate to contact us. In the meantime, here's what's happening... COMMERCIAL-FREE BLOCKS LAUNCH -- We told you last week about a "big change" being teased by KBEQ, and by now you might know it turned out to be a commercial-free block of music. The new 9AM to 11AM block launches as local stations continue to prepare for Arbitron's new PPM system. In addition to the rollout at Q104, two other Wilks Broadcasting stations unveiled similar initiatives - KCKC with "120 Minutes of Commercial-Free Lite Rock" from 8:50 to 10:50AM, and KFKF, who now offers a "Midday Music Marathon" commercial-free from 1PM to 3PM. The three moves at Wilks counter recent music-intensive programming by new PDs at direct competitors. In June, we told you about Entercom AC KUDL's new 8AM twenty-in-a-row music feature. And only two weeks ago, we let you know about a series of changes in progress at WDAF which will see the station transition to a solo AM drive host under the "ten in a row morning show" branding. With a couple of interesting battles shaping up over the coming months, we'll keep you updated. ED WALKER ADDS KFKF NIGHT DUTY -- With the impending demise of syndicated GAC Nights, Country 94.1 KFKF has turned to Ed Walker to voicetrack the shift. Walker, who will retain his PD/afternoon role at sister KCKC (Star 102), took over the shift on Monday - two days before it was announced that GAC Nights had not found a syndicator to replace Citadel Media. Himself a former country Program Director, Ed recently told AllAccess.com in a 10 Questions interview that "the way Dale [Carter, longtime KFKF PD] positions KFKF ("Playing both kinds of Country") has opened me up to more of an appreciation of the Gold product. If it's packaged right, man it sounds good!" In his new role, Walker will be able to not only enjoy the product, but also set an example for jocks he believes sometimes "don't put any thought or prep into a show just because it's voicetracked." BLACK SKY UNVEILS PREMIUM CONTENT -- In a model never before seen from a KC web radio station, month-old Black Sky Radio is now offering enhanced features on a subscription basis. Membership on the site is available for $3/month or $20/year. Members only features currently include access to program podcasts, a discussion board, photos, and more - with streaming video of the Nivens & Nightmare show coming soon. CLICK HERE for more information on the station's membership program. SUMMER TRENDS PHASE 2 RELEASED -- The latest summer Arbitrends for the Kansas City market were released on Wednesday, and saw KPRS overtake KQRC for the 12+ lead. CLICK HERE for a look at our recap on the trends for June/July/August. KPRS ROLLS OUT "FRIDAY NIGHT MIXTAPE" -- A new specialty show launched at KPRS this weekend, as longtime Friday night mix show "Club Jamz" was retired. Now airing in the 9PM to midnight slot is "Friday Night Mixtape," hosted by Hot 103 Jamz personalities Brian B' Shynin, Playmaker, and Big Kenny Diamondz. "SUNDAY MORNING" GETS NEW TIME; REPLAY -- In a move just announced today, RockRadioLive.com's "Positive & Uplifting Sunday Morning" with Joel Roberts moves to a new time. The show will now be heard from 6AM to 8AM, with a replay immediately following. POSNANSKI TACKLES "THE MACHINE" -- The latest book from Sports Illustrated Senior Writer, (still kinda) Kansas City Star sports columnist, and former KKGM co-host Joe Posnanski was released on Tuesday. Entitled The Machine, the book tells the story of the 1975 Cincinnati Reds baseball team. If you don't yet have your copy, CLICK HERE to pick it up today. MANCOW TO GUEST ON FX SERIES -- Kansas City native and syndicated talker Erich "Mancow" Muller spent the past week in LA, filming a guest appearance for the season finale of FX's "Sons of Anarchy." Muller explained his appearance to AllAccess.com by stating, "I am no actor and I hate having a mullet. But I will do anything to get people to check out my real love... which is radio." MELCHIOR LAUNCHES NEW FEATURES -- Former KKGM Program Director and Kansas City native Brooks Melchior launched a pair of new features to his popular website SportsByBrooks.com, this past week. "SbB Live" features a listing of breaking sports news as it happens - constantly updated throughout the day - allowing users to find newsbriefs chronologically, versus wading through other sports sites. "SbB@3" is a daily 3PM blog posting centered around a regular theme. For more information on these new features, CLICK HERE. Thanks again for reading, and have a great week! |

This week marked the release of Phase Two of the Summer Arbitrends for KC, and we have the 12+ numbers for your perusal. In the spirit of "fine print," these numbers are not the ones typically used to sell stations to advertisers, as each station is targeted to a more specific demo. Now, let's check 'em out... Carter Broadcasting's KPRS holds the top spot through the first 2/3 of the Summer Book with a 6.0 share (each share point is equal to 1% of the listening audience). Hot 103 Jamz is up 4/10ths so far from the Spring Book, landing then just ahead of #2 KQRC whose 5.9 constitutes a drop of nearly a point from the spring (and the largest decline in this trend, relative to the Spring Book). In the #3 position we have KMJK, owner of the biggest gain from the spring - a whopping 1.9 point jump - now within 3/10s of a point of KPRS. Rounding out the top five are KMXV at #4 and a fifth place tie between KFKF and KMBZ, both with 4.8 shares in the 12+. Other notes from this trend: KBEQ is up 8/10ths from the spring, climbing to a 4.2 - smack dab in the middle of sister KFKF's 4.8 and WDAF's 3.6 share... WHB & KCSP both see declines, but Sports Radio 810 still holds an 8/10ths of a point lead 12+... The third-largest gain in this trend went to little KYYS-AM, as Entercom's La Super X adds 7/10ths of a point to climb back into the top 20 - leapfrogging competitor KDTD and KKSN... 99-7 Kiss FM is down 4/10ths from the spring, and fell out of the 12+ top 20 - the first commercial FM outlet to do so since we started tracking ratings in the spring. Complete numbers follow below... |

Another week is done, so it's time again to recap the last week in Kansas City radio. Thanks for reading the Weekly Radio Recap here at BroadcastKC.com! MO' BOUNCE TAKES Z100 NIGHTS -- Here's a trivia question for you (to which I don't know the answer): How many former KC radio personalities have eventually made it to a full-time airshift in media market #1, New York City? Take that count and add one. A couple weeks ago, we told you one-time KCHZ night dude Mo' Bounce had departed his night gig at Hot 95.7 in Houston for a new destination. On Tuesday, he officially took over nights at WHTZ-New York, CHR Z100. KBEQ TEASING "BIG CHANGE" -- Listeners to KBEQ this weekend may have heard the station promoting a "big change" which will be announced sometime this Monday morning. With the Fall ratings book getting under way, my gut says "promotion" - but with the KC rights to Blue Collar Radio, which we discussed in July, still un-accounted for, the announcement may be worth a listen. KUDL TWEAKS IMAGING -- In May, we told you about the new imaging at KUDL, where long-time voices Jon Carter & Buffy O'Neil were replaced with original Star 102 voice guy Sean Caldwell. This week the station has tweaked that image, adding some new jingles and featuring Caldwell a bit less prominently. We'll post some samples for you soon. MORE CANADIANS TO GET MARLAR -- Remember last month when we told you Darren Marlar's syndicated program picked up it's first Canadian affiliate, CKIQ-Iqaluit? Well, that station launched the show on Tuesday, and by the end of the week Marlar had picked up another affiliate up North, this time a three station cluster in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. For more information on Marlar and his show, CLICK HERE. BUDDY BLATTNER PASSES -- Even after reading about it and Tweeting about it while putting together last week's recap, I still neglected to mention the passing of original Royals play-by-play voice Buddy Blattner. Blattner, who joined the team at it's inception in 1969, passed away on September 4th at the age of 89. Blattner was a former major league infielder who had prior broadcasting experience with the Angels, Browns & Cardinals. He left the Royals upon his retirement in 1975. For more on Blattner's life and career, check out a Royals tribute to him HERE. Thanks again for reading, and have a great week! |
