Some big happenings this week (special congratulations to KTBG, that one little station that breaks our impartiality rule!), and apparently more to come Monday morning. We'll be listening and will of course keep you posted. In the meantime, here's what went down this week... KCRADIO.COM TO FOLD MONDAY? -- The end is apparently near for Kelly Urich's online Hot AC KCRadio.com, as Urich has tweeted that the station's final show will air Monday morning. In a later Facebook posting Urich says "Listen 9:00 Monday...We're not flipping to Xmas music this time..." KCRadio.com, which launched in January 2009, built a devoted following of listeners from around the country - and world - while keeping Urich on the air during his non-compete period after exiting Wilks' KMXV the previous December. By August, the station added former Wilks National Imaging Director Joel Roberts for afternoon/Program Director duties. Roberts continued in middays after Urich left for Entercom in October, however, the station has been jockless since Roberts departed for EMF's Kansas City cluster at the end of December. Should the station cease operations on Monday, KCRadio.com will have pulled off the impressive feat of outlasting Entercom's terrestrial Hot AC KKSN by 74 days. 99-7 Kiss FM, which lured Urich aboard for afternoons last fall, flipped formats to 80s/90s hits as KGEX "Gen X Radio 99-7" in mid-April. KTBG NOMINATED FOR NATIONAL AWARDS -- Congratulations are in order this week for University of Central Missouri non-commercial Triple A KTBG, as the station has been nominated for a pair of prestigous awards. 90.9 the Bridge announced Friday that the station and long-time Program Director Jon Hart have both received nominations from FMQB's national Triple-A Awards. For The Bridge, the nomination is the station's second consecutive for the Non-Commericial Triple-A Station of the Year award (the station was last nominated in 2008, however no awards were issued last year). For Hart, a longtime Kansas City personality and Program Director since KTBG's inception in August 2001, the nomination for Non-Commercial Triple-A Program Director of the Year is his first. In a university release Hart shared, "There is a great deal of pride in the nominations among our staff, but also a resolve to work hard in the coming years to be deserving of the recognition." For the complete list of nominees, see the station's release HERE. The awards will be presented in Boulder, Colorado on August 14th. DARREN MARLAR TACKLES TALK; TV -- I like to joke that it's a continuing theme: Former KCNW/KCWJ/KFKF personality Darren Marlar is a busy guy. Here's another batch of proof to add to the file... On Monday and Tuesday (6/28-29) Marlar makes his first foray into talk radio, as he will be doing a test run hosting the 1PM to 3PM shift on 1330 WNTA in his home base of Rockford, Illinois. In a post announcing the audition on his website, Marlar notes "I've never done talk radio before in my life but I've always admired the guys who do it." In addition to his return to radio, Marlar has been keeping busy on the television side as well. We mentioned previously that he has a recurring role in "Preachers Kids: The Untold Stories," and that program (where he plays "Brother Make-a-Way") makes its debut in the Chicago area at 12:30AM Sunday. The show will begin airing in Dallas, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Austin next month. For more information on the show, visit its Facebook page HERE. Finally, Marlar has another television project set to get underway, as he has been cast in the role of George in a new online show called "Home Brew." That show, which will begin filming in the next month or so, is a production of VE.TV. EX-KKSN PD COOK EXITS PHILLY -- Former WDAF-FM and original KKSN program director John Cook is now a free agent, exiting Greater Media's Philadelphia cluster after not quite a year. According to a release issued by the company, Cook's contract was not renewed. You may recall that Cook exited KKSN abruptly last July for personal reasons, and landed the PD post at Greater Media's WNUW almost immediately. Since that station's flip to sports last October, Cook had been programming Adult Hits WBEN. KELLY STEVENS REJOINS WSB -- Former top 40 KBEQ morning co-host Kelly Stevens has re-joined WSB/Atlanta for weekend/fill-in duties, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Stevens, who was half of the Kelly & Alpha morning team with Alpha Trivette in Kansas City and elsewhere, returns to the station after two years on the beach, and will be on the air without his longtime morning partner for the first time in over twenty years. PONCH, TODT, SHARIFF PROFILED -- At the website of radio publication FMQB you can now view excerpts from an interview with KMXV PD/morning co-host Ponch that will appear in the magazine's July issue. Also, a Thursday feature in the Kansas City Star profiles Gregg Todt of KQRC's Johnny Dare Morning Show - to read that one see this link. Finally, in another profile of local talent, if you want to learn more about the newest addition to the team at Entercom's KCSP, then CLICK HERE to read a new All Access 10 Questions interview with Shan Sheriff, host of 610 Sports Radio's "New School." Have a great week! |
