Radio Ratings: Top 3 Remain, Despite Declines Print E-mail

Kansas City's 6+ PPM results for May 2010 were released on Friday, so it's time once again for us to share both the monthly 6+ results and cume for the market.  Though it is usually narrower sets of demographic information that are used for sales purposes, the 6+ are still useful to form general observations on the state of radio in Kansas City.

While all of the top three stations from the April 6+ ratings saw declines in May, none slipped far enough to lose its position.  Indeed, Entercom's KQRC, which lost half a ratings point (each full point is equal to 1% of KC listeners), fell to 7.1 but held on to the #1 position for a third straight month.  Number two KCFX, which has been on a surge the past two months, lost 3/10ths, but kept its grasp on the #2 slot with a 6.8 - two full points better than the 4.8 they earned at their low point back in February.  KCMO-FM remains in the third position despite losing .6 points from 6.6 to a 6.0.  Rounding out the top five, KPRS holds steady with a 5.9 to maintain 4th place, as KFKF gains .3 to climb into the #5 spot with a 5.5 - just slightly edging last month's #5, KMBZ, which once again pulled a 5.4 share.

Moving to gains/declines, the largest 6+ ratings increase from April to May belongs to EMF's KLRX, which gained back 9/10ths of a point after losing 1.2 points from March to April.  The jump brings K-Love 97.3 to a 3.9 share, and a tie for 12th place with Wilks country KBEQ, which lost .8 from the April ratings.  Another pair of seismic shifts in the 6+ resulted in a 22nd place tie for Kansas City's two newest stations.  In its first full month as 80s/90s hits "Gen X Radio 99-7," Entercom's KGEX saw the market's largest drop - a full ratings point from 2.4 to a 1.4 (exactly where the station, then pre-Kelly Urich KKSN, began the PPM era in October).  Rising to a 1.4 and the tie with KGEX was Cumulus HD2/translator combo 103-7 the Dam.  The Dam, which appeared in the ratings for the first time in April, added 8/10ths of a point to its initial .6 showing, for a May rating of 1.4.  The lead in local market share switched hands in May, as Cumulus put together a 29.2 share, while Entercom dropped a point to 28.3.  Also declining slightly was Wilks, which ended the month with a 17.5.
