If you've been listening to Kansas City radio for quite some time, you've probably come across at least a couple custom songs.  You know, the special cuts that seamlessly insert a station's call letters or brand.  It's hard to imagine over the years just how many songs have been customized by and for Kansas City radio stations, but we do believe we know where it started. 
 
As best we can tell, it all dates back to Tex Ritter and KCKN-AM in 1961.  According to KCKN Program Director Ted Cramer, Ritter was so enamoured with the station during a promotional tour for "I Dream of a Hillbilly Heaven" that he later sent KCKN a customized version of the song, featuring names of the KCKN airstaff in the lyrics.  Since then, countless artists have recorded lyrics tweaked to the benefit of local stations (while some other songs have been modified by the stations themselves).
